How to Get Out of Debt

If you have found yourself in a position where you are in serious debt and cannot think of a way out of the situation, then take a few minutes to read these few tips. Some may seem obvious but do put them into practise as they will help.

I am assuming that you are in a situation whereby your income for example; is 2,500 per month and your expenditure is 3,500. This is not a good position to find oneself in. A better position would be if you were earning 2,500 per month and your expenditure was only 1,800!!

It is so easy to despair when you encounter your first financial crisis. You're not alone. Many people face a financial crisis some time in their lives. Whether the crisis is caused by personal or family illness, the loss of a job, or overspending, it can seem overwhelming. But often, it can be overcome. The important thing to bear in mind is, not to panic!

We have all done it. We have all succumbed to the temptation of freely available credit. We have all signed on the dotted line for items based purely on self- gratification only to regret the decision at a later date. Of course, once it starts it tends to spiral out of control and you then find yourself in this current predicament.

The first thing you have to do is take stock of your debt. At this point you should be very realistic with yourself and itemise every expense no matter how trivial it may seem. Most people fail at this hurdle because they lie to themselves about the expenditure. They conveniently forget about certain items, make excuses about other bills or blame the problem onto someone else. Anything in fact, except facing up to the reality check. I must stress again, that in order to stop the downward spiral of debt you must be brutal in your approach. If you really cannot face the breakdown of your expenses then get someone you know to help you.

The most obvious first step is to prepare a budget and although it may not be everyone's idea of fun it is nevertheless necessary if you are to take the first step towards overcoming your financial situation.
Have you seriously considered preparing a budget? Not just a mental note but a written exercise taking a long, cold, hard and truthful look at your predicament.
It may sound a very obvious statement to make but the first step toward taking control of your financial situation, is to do a realistic assessment of how much money you earn and how much money you spend. The operative word here being realistic. It may not be pleasant to be so forthright about your own circumstances but if you choose to ignore certain aspects then you are just deceiving yourself and the whole exercise would become a complete waste of your time.

Consider these questions:

How many credit cards or debit cards do you have?
Try to reduce the number of credit cards you hold and set yourself a monthly expenditure budget. Do not exceed the amount you selected. Rather than have multiple credit cards shop around for the one offering the best rates and transfer over to that card. The less credit cards or debit cards you have the less the temptation to overspend.

How many times a week do you go out?

Do you really need to go out clubbing every night of the week? Why not reduce the number of nights out from seven to two or three. You may be pleasantly surprised to discover that you can live quite well without going out every night.

How much do you spend on cigarettes and drink?

Calculate how much per week you spend on cigarettes and drink? Quite surprising, isn t it?
Why not try to cut down on the amount you smoke and drink not only for the sake of your finances but more importantly for the sake of your health.

Do you really need more clothes?

This is a difficult question to answer as we all have different views on style, clothing and fashion. Nevertheless, you need to assess your own circumstances and decide whether that particular item of clothing is absolutely necessary or not. In most cases you will find that it is not as critical as you first thought.

Will the car not last another year?

Why change the car now. Will it not last for another year? If you must have a new car this year, does it have to be the top of the range model? You will be pleasantly surprised at how much you can save by not having a few of the latest gadgets added.

The weekly shop:

Ask yourself, do I really need two shopping trolleys worth of food every week?
We are all obsessed by our weight and yet we all walk out of the supermarket laden to excess and then wonder why we are putting on weight. This in turn means that you will spend more money on fancy diets, get more depressed and end up eating more food! Try to buy less and buy fresh.

There is no magic wand as far as recovering from debt is concerned. It takes time, it can be a struggle but it will be worth it in the end. Hope that this has helped.

You're already doing unofficial home study when you research a project online. Study in class has its place, but...

Up to date I've done many courses in classrooms but only two were very useful. I've learned most of the useful stuff from books or the Internet.

What will help you most in life?

The most valuable thing you learn at school is to write an essay. Essays help you organise your thoughts. An essay helps you convince people. Your
feedback in a home study course will mostly be essays. This will encourage you to write a good essay.

Many years ago I read about Electronics, and took a correspondence course on the subject, and made electronic gadgets for where I worked.

Then I decided to study Electronics at college. Unfortunately the nearest I could get to it was Physics with Electronics as the main subject, so I qualified in Physics.

The lecturers were shockingly out of date. One of my classmates and I spent a lot of time instructing the lecturers. We'd learned modern stuff from books and practical use.

It has been said "Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach." What this means is that lecturers sat through lectures and passed exams. They go on to teach what they learned in these lectures - which is already out of date. That's the first benefit of home study.

Three advantages of classroom study

1. You can get recognised certificates when you
pass exams

2. You can get a useful plan for what to study

3. Facilities for practical work

You'll have noticed that although I learned more from my home study course, I still did a four-year course at college. I couldn't get recognised exam certificates from correspondence courses. That was the main benefit.

If you want to study genetics and you don't even know what a gene is, you obviously don't know enough to plan a syllabus for your home study.

You get a useful skeleton outline from your lectures. Using my book about exams you will learn how to improve on the skeleton, but you need one
to improve on!

At home you don't have a chemistry laboratory or a machine shop or volunteers to practice dentistry.

Apprenticeships let you learn about real life from an employer. Schools and colleges have labs and workshops for you to do your practical work.

Lecturers don't know as much about practical work as an employer would. I hated doing chemical titrations because they took such a long time.

Then I noticed that one of my classmates took about a quarter of the time, with greater accuracy. He worked during his holidays at a chemistry lab. He showed me the tricks and I was soon flying through my titrations too.

Even if you do have a machine shop at home, you'll be taught safe working procedure in a conventional course. That could save you from being a cripple for the rest of your life.

Instant Feedback

When I was about to hold a chunk of metal with a rag wrapped round my hand to give me extra grip, my lecturer yelled a warning. That probably kept me from losing my hand.

Even if you're learning something safe like oil painting, you can learn faster with instant feedback from a lecturer strolling around behind the students.

Oh, you could take a digital photograph of your oil painting and shoot it down the line to an instructor, but she could be having a meal, or even be asleep if she is on the other side of the world. So you still won't have instant feedback.

Writing essays works fine.

Conventional courses for abilities

It seems that conventional courses win out when you want to develop an ability, unless your parents already have that ability to pass on to you.

Knowledge courses

Of course, there are knowledge courses such as English, Philosophy, History, Anthropology where you don't have a practical syllabus. These are
ideal for home study, and perfect for using an essay as a tool.

More and more Universities offer online courses. You can get recognised certificates with home study. You just need to be good at writing an essay (see my free report) and a few other exam techniques to succeed.

Even technical courses have lots of theory. University extension courses allow you to study the theory online. Then you just go to college for your practical work.

Distractions

A friend of mine refused to be distracted by girls or parties or sport until he completed his degree as a dentist.

I don't think I could have overcome these distractions. If you do home study you don't have any distractions.

Conclusion:
I prefer home study any time that it is available. However you can't learn to sing, or karate, or dentistry without a teacher, so conventional study is often needed to supplement home study. Essay writing is particularly useful in home study.

Today, however, with the advanced audio-visual technology (think DVD players, powerful new speakers, and digital high-definition projectors) nearly everyone can afford a stylish home entertainment environment that can rival your local movie theater.

The term "home theater" refers to any combination of audio and visual equipment in your home that attempts to duplicate or surpass the sights and sounds of the movie theater experience. This definition can vary widely, however. On the high end, you can have a custom designed (and built) home theater that costs thousands of dollars--complete with high end video projector, state-of-the-art DVD player(s), separate amplifiers for each channel, dozens of in-ceiling speakers and some subwoofers that can shake the paint off your neighbor's garage.

To add to the confusion, each of these types of screens is available in standard quality or the new high-definition format.

The second, and some would say most important piece of equipment, is the sound system. If you are truly looking to recreate the movie sound in your home, surround sound is your best bet. It is a recording technique that, when paired with a speaker system, puts the viewer in the center of the action with sounds that move front to back, and side to side. It is not about louder sound, rather, it is about sound that envelops the listener and provides directionality to off-screen sound effects.

A media player is another component to your system, and most people today choose DVD as their preferred format. When connected to a receiver and speakers, or when connected to a home theater system, most DVD players can play audio CDs. If you plan to use your DVD player to play CDs on a regular basis, you may want to consider a multidisc player over a single disc model.

Other necessities and accessories range from speaker choices, lighting controls, auto-retracting curtain (to conceal the screen), and certainly comfortable seating. Seating choices, like everything else, vary widely. Your biggest decision in this area is whether you want your home theater to look like a "home" or a "theater." If you want the miniature theater look, you can get stadium type seating that closely resembles your local theater. For a more "homey" look, you may wish to go with more traditional armchairs.

An Author Interview with Laura Jensen Walker, This Old Dump: Renovate Without Decking Your Mate

The Hendey family has been caught up in the home improvement craze for years, but our children have gotten in on the act too since becoming fans of one of those home makeover shows. So when we took our teenager to pick out paint chips for his room last summer, we shouldn t have been surprised when he chose a moon rock green hue, embedded with grains of sand and flecks of glitter. OK...we invited his involvement in the project, so we were going to have to live with the results!

What we didn t think to do was to begin the room makeover with prayer as it turns out we could have definitely used the guidance of the Holy Spirit! Had I read the new book by Laura Jensen Walker, I would have approached this project and others around our home with a little more wisdom and a lot more patience. This Old Dump: Renovate Without Decking Your Mate, (Revell, September 2004, paperback, 156 pages) offers fun and humorous suggestions for surviving your home improvement projects without destroying your marriage in the process. Laura blends hilarious home improvement tales with practical tips and solutions.

Laura Jensen Walker had the following comments on her book and surviving renovation projects:

Q: Laura Jensen Walker, author of This Old Dump: Renovate Without Decking Your Mate, it s so great to have the opportunity to share your new book with our readers! Could you please start off by telling our readers a bit about you and your family?

A: I m a full-time author and speaker and have been married for over thirteen years to Michael, my wonderful Renaissance-man husband (the man can do ANYthing from sewing beautiful quilts to reupholstering furniture to knocking down walls, putting up fences, gardening, woodworking, cooking, painting, acting, and singing just to name a few.) In fact, the first time I saw him, he was singing. Can you say smitten? I m also a 12-year breast cancer survivor (I was diagnosed the day after our first wedding anniversary) who knows firsthand the healing power of humor. Michael and I live in Sacramento, California with our canine-daughter Gracie.

Q: People take their home renovations so seriously these days. What was your motivation for writing a humorous book on the topic?

A: To get people to lighten up a little. And to realize they re not alone in their home improvement horror stories. AND to give them a reality check that it s not like what they see on TV. Their renovation will not be complete in 60 minutes. (Something about not having Ty Pennington and 250 Home Depot workers to help.) Most of all, to make them laugh rather than tear their family members from limb to limb - or head to divorce court.

Q: What are the most important tips you d share with families considering taking on home improvement projects?

A: Be aware from the very beginning that every home improvement project will probably cost at least twice as much as you thought and take three times as long (and most likely require an electrician.)

Flexibility is key. So is communication. Don t be so rigid in having to have your own way/the most beautiful home on the block that you can t adapt/adjust when things go wrong. (But along those same lines, guys: as much as humanly possible, let her have her way or you will pay.)

And women: Every man needs a room of his own (with apologies to Virginia Woolf) and not just the garage. Let him have a space of his own to decorate however he wants - whether it be hunting/fishing chic, football frenzy, or gadgets galore. Just be sure there s a door you can close. (You get free rein in the rest of the house, so don t begrudge him his space. Besides, that way you don t have to have his sports trophies in the den.)

Q: Do you have any ideas for including kids in renovation projects?

A: Our four-footed canine daughter doesn t like whenever we renovate/make changes around the house - she always runs and hides under the bed. We tried to get her opinion on paint color, but she wouldn t tell us. With actual two-footed children who can respond, ask their opinions, and depending on their age, give them something to do (that doesn t require scary power tools) so they ll feel part of the process too.

Q: Your book includes wonderful scriptural references at the completion of many of the chapters. What role should faith take in tackling projects around the house?

A: Prayer is essential. Daily. To help you get through the stress and strain of renovation. And it helps to keep in mind the big picture. There s that old saying Home is where the heart is. Your family is your heart and your home, given to you by God. And they re more important than any house. I especially love the proverb (24:3): By wisdom a house is built, and through understanding it is established.

Q: What s your favorite story shared in the book?

A: That s a tough one. It s a toss-up between my Wisconsin cousin racing to the bathroom and in her hurry not realizing the carpenter was framing the window until she looked up and saw this big smile on his face. Luckily, she had on an oversized sweatshirt, so she figured she d just pull her shirt down over her knees and back out the door. Once out of his line of vision, she pulled her pants up and her shirt down. Then she looked up and there in the bedroom window was another carpenter with a grin on his face. He thought she was mooning him! (I told her that gives new meaning to worker s compensation.)

The other story is of my friends Bill and Andrea. Andrea had a hard time choosing a paint color for their dining room. She thought she wanted green and selected her paint chip, then bought a quart of paint and painted a small section. Of course, the color was never exactly the same as the chip, but she kept trying. Green after green after green. Then after visiting a friend s house who had a pretty taupe (dark tan for you guys) color, she tried a couple variations of that. When Bill got home that night, he took one look at the tan-and-green camouflage wall and shouted Get down! then he made the sound of a machine gun firing.

Q: Laura, thank you again for your time and participation in this interview. Could you say a word or two about your previous and future writing projects? Are there any additional thoughts or comments you d like to share with our readers?

A: I ve written a total of ten non-fiction books so far, but the one closest to my heart is Thanks for the Mammogram: Fighting Cancer with Faith, Hope, & a Healthy Dose of Laughter. Another one that was fun to write and came out this year is Girl Time: A Celebration of Chick Flicks, Bad Hair Days & Good Friends. What I m most excited about, however, is that my first NOVEL will be coming out in Spring 2005! It s called Dreaming in Black & White and is in the funny chick-lit genre. (Personally I think our increasing reliance on all things electrically based, with no alternative parallel backup manual systems is a t least worrying and at worst frightening.)

Holidays may even become a matter of plugging in to distant locations via a sensual virtual link, sort of web cam with touch and emotion, then no more travelling, packing, flying, ferrying, just dreaming awake with subliminal time outs for ordering. We are leaving an age of choice and reason and opinions to go to an era of facile effortless indulgence and contentment at the expense of our free will being subjugated to appeasing the convenient, the line of minimal effort. Every day that passes it is easier to spend and receive, easier to indulge and then discard. It is also becoming increasingly hard to manage and function without a mobile, a laptop, a PC and a Net; and more expensive to buck the system and do it manually .
Soon there will be no money, no bartering, no MANUALLY. Soon it will all be credit and online and AUTOMATICALLY .
Who is to say which is preferable, but there is little doubt which way it will go. Ask your computers, they will tell you if you don t believe me; soon we will be more comfortable talking to our computer than to each other. Apparently even now users in Internet cafes and Universities use the SAME computer in a room of many, giving choice, because they TRUST that one, they are happy it worked for them before; plus your computer never lies to you or annoys you or answers you back, it just does what you say, for now.

So I envisage a shift towards a 2001 HAL society where your every perceived need and want is second guessed, offered, accepted and delivered. No actual feeling of paying or ordering or thinking is likely, simply a constantly replenished supply of perishables with a finite life span. Not pay today and throw away but Don t think why just re supply and to this end all software, peripherals, and the Net will be geared up to be more and more effortless to you and less and less manual intervention from you, in the race to automate the mundane and strip away the stress and even choice in supplying what are perceived and judged to be your needs, albeit by others.
As long as your credit is good it will be an effortless electronic environment, always assuming zero credit/banking errors, which may gradually become more and more hard to actually prove has happened as the Net becomes unassailable and infallible seeming. Computers are not good at self regulation. The race to supply this panacea is currently attempting a wireless supplantment of hard wired technology. I am not at all convinced that the security and interference aspects of these items and strategy have been fully thought through and addressed, especially in light of the plethora of new gadgets which all use various similar frequencies. We will address these issues in the next missive from Mars. I leave you with a sobering thought. We can now use many times better fabrics, papers, materials and manufacturing processes than we ever could say late last century. Yet things from that era, like cookers, fridges, books, vintage cars, tape recorders, LPs, reel to reel tapes, model trains for example are still working (in many instances BETTER than their modern counterparts). If we are so advanced then why do we deliberately manufacture things which are not meant to survive for even a fraction of the durability of these old items, when we have better materials, better tools, better knowledge, and better tolerances.
We are a million times better at selling, and what we sell falls apart in no time, and no one seems to care, notice or even question such a trade in of quality and reliability and style for shoddy, unreliable unremarkable rubbish.
A friend of mine is in printing, and the challenge there and here in all aspects of modern manufacturing, is to put back quality, trust, and reliability and promote the value of true worth over transient gloss. It would appear the sales industry has become so perfected at what it does people have lost sight of the actual quality of what they buy, and how long it is likely to last. We seem to prize short term gain over long term pride and craftsmanship; we outsource all our manufacturing to offshore and far east enterprises purely on the basis of short term cost and at the real cost of long term inability to produce from within our own lands and dependency on others abroad, what price then low cost when they are the sole capable producers? Once you have thrown out the basement and the foundations it is hard to rebuild your house. If the incentive were not solely focussed on style over substance and cheapness over craftsmanship, If advertising actually pushed us responsibly to think that quality is a virtue in itself worth paying for, and you DO in the end get EXACTLY what you pay for, then maybe Rolls Royce, Jaguar, Royal Doulton, Wedgwood and Hornby would not be outsourcing to China or mass producing what were classic marques and designs in grotesque parodies of their former selves, under new managements using old famous names but not reflecting old hand made craftsmanship, pride and years of reliability.
We also seem to stifle ourselves with rules that do not seem to apply to our competitors and then let them walk all over us on price. Take my printing friends trade; we try to use sustainable or recycled sources, wheras the competition is happily chopping down virgin forests and bleaching paper. Multiply that by all the call centres, toy manufacturing and base manufactured products in the far east and China , where the basic wage is infinitesimally small for huge undercutting of the west and how can we compete, we of the fair wage for all and minimum wage per hour ? China and the East think in centuries, we think in days in comparison. In centuries though we will have no manufacturing base left.
Does no-one see the irreparable damage being done by losing brands such as Royal Doulton, or all the lace and cotton industry or the steel and shipbuilding? Everything is being sacrificed on the altar of expediency and lowest possible cost price versus maximised profits. Surely someone should see a gap in the market for quality and reliability in hand made articles made with pride by master craftsmen, or classic books bound in age old style and antique charm.
we are truly brilliant at advertising, so why not let the goods match the spiel and create a niche market for connoisseurs if you like , an upper level style AND substance branding for those with discernment and a little more disposable income thoughtfully employed and not frittered. Better one Dickens than twenty Mills and Boon.
It is possible quality may re emerge and make a comeback and substance may yet win out over gloss and style, as everything is cyclic in the long run. We await the future, but my bet is the book and the magnetic tape will eventually be seen to be better than the .doc and the cd.
Surely a hand bound First edition of Dickens is a little above a computer print out? Surely an original reel to reel of Dark Side of the Moon through a Ferrograph is a different planet to a bland and frequency challenged CD. Look on EBay at second hand prices of LPs Reel to Reels First editions . Then look at second hand prices of CDs and talking book cassettes. If the resale value of quality is there why is the sale value eroded and derided in favour of mass produced inferior brands?
Recently an original DSOM sold for 305 pounds plus postage, the CD sells for four quid.
I digressed into the quality field to outline another possible avenue for the future, QUALITY MAY RESURFACE.
We may yet see a renaissance of hand made goods, ideally suited to internet sales and perhaps have new searches like Quality Quest and Antique Admiration new websites like Handmade Hardbacks and Solidwood Style .
As stressed before the world at large is strangely cyclic, so it is possible the markets may cry out for goods once more that do what they say they will for a long time, are craftsman made, individual, reliable and do not depreciate or fall apart overnight. Given small workshops from home could become a cottage industry once more, the whole the sum of its parts, what better way to re promote an old idea than via the internet?
Just as Opera and Classical music is resurgent, so too quality goods may reinvent themselves. I hope so.

For Everyone Who Has Ever Struggled Sorting Out Benefits From Features - "SWAT Them!"

SWAT is not actually an acronym. It is a compaction of the question "so what?"

You see, one of the biggest problems that even experienced copywriters and marketers fall into is being clear on what benefits their product or service actually delivers to their customers.

SWAT provides the solution.

Here is how it works:

Take a piece of paper. Divide it into columns one headed features and one headed benefits.
Under the features column list all the features that come to mind.
Under the benefits column list all the benefits you deliver. (Don t worry about neatness there will not be a one-to-one correspondence between features and benefits)
Now, get yourself back in your customers mindset. Take each feature in turn and ask yourself "SO WHAT?"
And keep on asking the question until you can't think of any sensible, benefit oriented, answer.
Do this for every feature in your list
Now go back and repeat the process for every benefit you originally listed

It is pretty certain that the same benefits will occur many times over as you run through this exercise. That's fine. These are the ultimate benefits you have been looking for. These are the benefits you will 'sell' to your customer.

An example

I wear a pretty cheap and tacky diver s watch. Its features include:

water proof to 50m (that s about 164 feet)
accurate to 1 second per year
tells the time in 2 time zones
dual analogue and digital display
shock proof
stop watch
back light
day, month date function
5 year battery life

Now for certain prospects this list of features is pretty powerful on its own. Principally young men who like to dazzle their friends with the latest gadgets and gizmos.

But let's try to figure out some marketable benefits for a wider audience.

"Water proof to 50m"

So what?

You can wear the watch while diving

So what?

You can be sure it is waterproof enough for all day-to-day use

So what?

You can put the watch on and forget it - no matter what you are doing

So what?

Accurate time keeping -anytime, anyplace.

So what?

???

Your thought patterns would obviously be different to mine. But I am now stuck. The question "So What?" doesn't lead me to another statement. No matter. I am pretty happy with the last couple above. Either of them talks to me of the real benefits the watch could bring.

Now I would need to go away and do the same thing for all of the other features. When I first did this exercise I ended up with over 120 benefits (and this for something that is definitely pretty cheap and tacky). I am not going to do that here again.

The benefits that kept repeating were the go anywhere, do anything, super accurate timekeeping.

I was able to produce 30 plus benefit driven headlines. And I had no difficulty in sorting out the benefits from the features.

And all in a little over an hour.

Seems a pity that I don't actually sell watches.

Internet auctions are relatively new having been around since the mid 1990's. There are several Internet auctions including Yahoo Auctions and UBid. But of course the undisputed king of Internet auctions is Ebay. Ebay has over 100 million registered users making it one of the top 10 most visited websites in the world.

I discovered Ebay way back in 1998. At first, I was strictly a buyer. I was amazed at the thousands of items that could be found on Ebay. Just about anything you can imagine can be found on Ebay. And there were more incredible bargains to be found than at any other ecommerce website or brick and mortar store I had ever visited. After about six months or so of buying, I began selling items on Ebay. I had an extensive collection of unbuilt as well as built plastic model cars. I began placing the models on Ebay with starting bids of $5.00 and no reserve. To my surprise, people started jumping all over these model kits. Some of them sold for as high as $70.00. It was at this time that I realized the enormous money making potential of Ebay. The key to being a successful seller on Ebay is selling items that people want. There are a number of ebooks on Internet auctions that tell of the importance of a great headline and a killer ad for your auction. While this is true, it is also important to remember that the best ad in the world will never sell an item that no one wants. The items that do well on Ebay are unique or interesting items. Antiques, pottery, collectables and high-end apparel are just a few of the items that will bring high bids on Ebay. If you can easily find the item at Wal-Mart, chances are it will not do well on Ebay.

There are a number of wholesalers around the country that you can buy merchandise from to sell on Ebay. But before you buy, do your homework. It's very tempting to buy a bunch of electronic widgets that sell for $2.00 a piece. You might think you can buy 20 of the $2.00 widgets and then sell them for $12.00 a piece on Ebay and make a killing. Unfortunately, you discover that no one is bidding on your widgets despite the fact that you have started the bidding at a mere $6.00. In fact, there are very few people that are even viewing your auctions. The end result is you are now stuck with 20 widgets that no one wants. The first mistake here was not doing a search of widgets on Ebay to find out if they're hot or not. The second mistake was trying to sell an electronic item. Yes, I know there is a huge market for electronic gadgets. That's the problem; the market is too huge. It is already saturated. How many times a day are you bombarded with offers for the latest and greatest cell phone or digital camera? If you try to sell in this market on Ebay, you're encroaching on Best Buy's turf, which means you'll be smashed like a bug. On the other hand, how many offers do you receive for NASCAR collectibles or Gucci shoes? Or how about die cast models? These are the hot items on Ebay. These are in demand items and more importantly you can sell these items without competing against Wal-Mart and Best Buy.

If you're new to Ebay, the first thing you need to do is to build positive feedback. Feedback is vital to your success on Ebay. Potential buyers will read your feedback in order to determine if you're an honest seller. If you have high numbers of negative feedback, many buyers will look elsewhere. Take a look at some of the Ebay Power Sellers feedback. Many of them have feedback in the thousands with a rating of over 99% positive. It's no secret how these Power Sellers became successful on Ebay. They take care of their customers. This means they'll have plenty of repeat business.

When you first sign up with Ebay, you'll have zero feedback. Most buyers will shy away from an Ebay newbie with zero or very low feedback. Start building your feedback rating by selling personal items from around the house that you no longer want. This is a good way to get the feel of using Ebay and to build positive feedback. You should invest in a good digital camera. Good clear pictures are an important selling feature on Ebay. Remember to describe your items accurately and honestly. Do not try to trick or deceive buyers in any way. You can't afford receiving negative feedback this early in the game.

I came across a perfect example of a deceptive seller on Ebay a while back. The seller had sold a pair of slightly used shocks for a 2003 Chevy pickup. He used Ebay's Buy-It-Now feature to sell the shocks for just one cent. Wow! What an incredible deal! But wait a minute. The unwary buyer forgot to read the entire auction. The shipping charges were a whopping 60 bucks! The result was a pissed off buyer and negative feedback for the seller. This was an obvious attempt on the part of the seller to make money on the shipping costs. He was banking on the fact that the buyer would not read the entire auction and would simply assume the shipping charges would be reasonable. Do not use deception in your auctions or try to make money on shipping costs. If you treat your customers the way you expect to be treated you will never go wrong and you'll be well on your way to building a reputation as an honest top-notch seller.

If you happen to get a few non-paying bidders, resist the temptation to leave negative feedback for these individuals. Leaving negative feedback will only result in possible retaliation by the non-paying bidder and negative feedback for you. Once again, you do not want any negative feedback this early in the game. Buying items off of Ebay is another great way to build positive feedback. When you win an auction, pay for the item promptly. The result will be positive feedback for you. Most buyers will not care whether your feedback came as a result of buying or selling as long as it's positive.

After you've built a feedback rating of least 25, you'll be ready to start purchasing wholesale merchandise to sell on Ebay. Remember what I said about doing your homework before buying merchandise. If you have your eye on a particular item you think might sell on Ebay, first do a search of that item on Ebay to find out what people are bidding if anything on the item. If it looks hot, at least 7 or 8 bids, then it's probably a good bet. If it doesn't appear to be getting many bids, you should steer clear. You can also do an advanced search for auctions that have already ended. It's a great way to find out the final bid price for a particular item. A few extra minutes of research can save you from a giant headache down the road.

Think of an expensive, fully applianced home on a pristine lake with a gleaming metal rooftop covered by solar panels. If you look closely the windows on this house are sensitive to light and turn in color like expensive sunglasses. You see a rainwater harvesting system attached to a gutters downspout tube supplying beautiful rain gardens and goldfish ponds with greywater. Discovering Infidelity - One Woman s Story

The day I discovered my husband was cheating on me is forever etched in my mind. I will never forget my bewilderment, shock, confusion and my uncertainty about what to do next. I was totally devastated.

How I Found Out

As a freelance journalist and editor, I work from my home office. I accidentally stumbled onto Frank s infidelity while doing interviews for an article assignment for a women s magazine. To insure the accuracy of my notes, I always tape my interviews using a recording device attached to my office phone. While transcribing the interview tapes, I was shocked to find that I d unknowingly recorded a number of incriminating phone calls made by Frank from our bedroom extension. Interspersed between the interviews, were revealing conversations he d had with or about the women with whom he was involved.

A Perfect Marriage

That Frank might be cheating on me was the farthest thing from my mind, even though his behavior had been a little unusual the past few months. When infidelity did cross my mind, it was just a fleeting thought -- one I dismissed as quickly as it occurred. It was so far-fetched that I didn t even give it serious consideration. Frank and I had an exceptionally good marriage (or so I thought). People who knew us -- even strangers, (male and female) often commented on what a perfect couple we were. I wrote relationship articles which appeared regularly in women s magazines and earned me frequent guest spots on Good Day New York and several nationally syndicated radio talk shows. Our marriage (my second and Frank s third) was the envy of all our friends. Still, I was at a loss to explain some of the odd little things Frank had recently said and done. Nothing major -- just small insignificant things that were out of character for him and didn t seem to make any sense. I chalked it up to male menopause (Frank was nearing 50) or stress from the heavy overtime he d been working. Little did I know that these seemingly inconsequential things would turnout to be telltale signs.

Right Under My Very Nose

From the conversations on the tapes, I discovered that Frank had not one, but three lovers. I was dumb-founded to hear him boasting to a friend about his weekend morning quickies with Alexis, his early departures from work for afternoon trysts with Michelle, Marlene s weekend stay at our apartment while I was away on a business trip and more. Even more astounding, was that all these things had taken place right under my very nose. In light of my discovery, I now saw Frank s behavior through different eyes. And I became keenly aware of how many telltale signs I d missed. Many of the odd things Frank said and did suddenly began to make sense.

Wendy s Story- Another Infidelity Victim

On one tape, Frank mentioned a birthday he d recently attended which was given by his best friend Max. No other details were supplied except that the party was for Max s girlfriend. Since Max s wife, Wendy was a friend of mine, I told her what I heard. Working one single piece of information, Wendy conducted what I consider to be a masterpiece of detective work. In less than 2 weeks, she managed to find out the name of Max s girlfriend, her phone number and address, where she worked, the address and phone number of her job, and was able to pinpoint approximately how long the affair had been going on. Wendy also found out exactly where and when the birthday party had taken place, how much it cost, the names of several guests who attended, and verified that that Max was indeed the person who arranged and paid for the event. She even confiscated a gift for Max s lover that he d hidden in the trunk of his car. Since Wendy and Max co-owned a business, she immediately took steps to protect herself financially by transferring the bulk of their joint funds to a separate account -- much to the surprise (and embarrassment) of Max when he attempted to withdraw funds without her knowledge. Their marriage survived -- largely because instead of sitting back and being a passive victim, Wendy immediately searched for confirming telltale signs. She found them early enough to take positive action and get her marriage back on track.

If Only I d Recognized the Signs

Discovering that Frank was cheating was truly devastating. Being a naturally trusting person, I was oblivious to most of the telltale signs, despite the fact that they were staring me in the face. I later learned that many telltale signs begin to crop up when a man first starts think seriously about infidelity. For months I agonized over how things might have turned out differently if I d recognized the signs when they first began to appear. It s possible that I might have been able to save our marriage if I d known the significance of those signs. If not, I could have at least saved myself a lot of heartaches and pain by preparing myself mentally and emotionally, and protecting myself legally and financially from a marriage that ultimately ended in divorce. Yet, my marriage was not unique in this respect. It was one of the millions of marriages impacted by extramarital affairs.

9 Years of Research and a Promise

At the time there were less than 5 books available on the subject of infidelity. Desperate for information, I endured the embarrassment of purchasing them at my local bookstore. As I struggled to make sense of what was happening, I began earnestly researching the topic of infidelity so I could find out how to handle the situation. My research led to my writing a series of infidelity articles based on information gleaned from leading marriage and family therapists. Although I gained a wealth of knowledge about and coping with infidelity and recognizing the telltale signs, for me, this knowledge came too late. Frank and I eventually got a divorce. But I promised myself that when I recovered from the trauma of that experience, I would share this information with other women in similar situations.

The Infidelity Statistics are Shocking

It was shocking read the statistics citing how widespread infidelity is. Though they vary from study to study, the most widely accepted figures indicate that between 50 and 70 percent of married men (between 38 and 53 million men) have cheated or will cheat on their wives. One study found that 2/3 of the wives (26 to 36 million women) whose husbands were cheating had no idea their husbands were having an affair -- largely because they failed to recognize the telltale signs. Yet the media continues to treat infidelity as a form of entertainment. Movies, novels, soap operas, talk shows, gossip columns and women s magazines continue to dramatize, trivialize and glamorize extramarital affairs. Few people other than its victims take it seriously.
